Kannur - The Best Spot of Sun, Sand and Sea

Kannur is also known as Cannanore, It is a beach town in the Kannur District of Kerala. It is the largest city in the northern parts of Malabar. It is known as "Land of Looms and Lores". The city has a rich colonial heritage and many signs of this can still be seen today. Kannur is popular among travellers because of its clean beaches.It has numerous beaches and rocky seashores. Kannur has the only drive inn beach in Kerala. The Muzhappilangad Beach, a swimmer's paradise, is visited by several adventure enthusiasts. This beach is the only drive-in beach in Kerala with a driving length of 4 km.The Payyambalam Beach, Meenkunnu Beach, Mopila Bay and Kizhunna Ezhara Beach are other popular beaches in the region. The Sundareswara Temple and Kottiyoor Shiva Temple, both of which are dedicated to Lord Shiva, are counted among the notable religious places of the region.

Popular tourist attractions of the city also include temples where many festivals are celebrated throughout the year. The Kadalayi Sreekrishna Temple, Oorpazhassi Kavu Temple, Sri Mavilayikkavu Temple and Shree Raghavapuram Temple are some of the other popular temples that can be visited. Pallikunnu is a major town, famous for the Shree Mookambika Temple. Ezhimala, Malayala Kalagramam and Pazhassi Dams are important attractions of this destination. Another major sightseeing of this region is Thalassery, which is famous for the Thalassery Fort, Saidar Mosque and Shree Jagannath Temple. Other prime attractions are the Thiruvangad Temple and Shree Ramaswami Temple. Tourists can also visit the Aralam Wildlife Sanctuary that covers an area of around 55 sq km. The Chavachi Waterfall and Ambalapara Peak, located in proximity of this sanctuary, are other popular attractions.

What to See....

Aaralam Wildlife Sanctuary: This sanctuary is located on slopes of Western Ghats and is famous for its semi green tropical forests. This is a very calm and serene place and a delight for wildlife enthusiasts. Here one can see different kinds of deers, boars, elephants and bisons. This place is also rich in plant kingdom.

St Angelo Church: Also known as Fort Kannur this church was built by Don Francisco de Almeida in 1505AD. He was a Portuguese Viceroy. This church offers a beautiful view of the Arabian Sea. St Angelo has a long history. In 1663 it was captured by Dutch. In 1772 Muslim rulers ruled it and finally it was captured by the British.

Alappuzha Beach- This is one of the most popular picnic spots in Alppuzha. The pier, which extends into the sea here, is over 137 years old. Entertainment facilities at the Vijaya Beach Park add to the attractions of the beach.

Payyambalam Beach: It is situated about 2 km from Kannur and is a very tranquil and peaceful beach. It is also a very prominent picnic spot. It is very seclude beach and the perfect destination to spend the holidays in the lap of nature. The lush green palm trees and blue water is a true delight for travelers.

Dhramadam Island: This Island is a major center for the believers of Buddhism. This place is fully covered with beautiful coconut palms and plush green bushes. The mesmerizing and serene tranquility of this region is very popular among tourists.

By Air : Kannur is easily reachable by air as the nearest airport is the Kozhikode Airport, which is located at a distance of 93 kilometers from Kannur to the south.

By Rail : Kannur has its own railway station and is an important junction in Kerala. Trains from many neighboring states also pass through this town to reach other places. Thus, it is well connected by rail to Kerala and other nearby states.

By Road : Kannur is well linked by a wide network of roads and can be reached from anywhere in Kerala.
